Shelf Love: The Benefits of Heavy Duty Industrial Shelving

Two Mitsubishi Forklifts in Warehouse Aisle

Because products must remain in good condition while they are being stored, proper shelving is an essential part of any warehouse space. However, many business owners can agree that picking the right shelving system for their warehouse is one of the most challenging tasks to perform. Fortunately, there are warehouse solution services that exist with the sole purpose of guiding you through the shelving selection and installation processes. This, coupled with the benefits below, makes installing heavy duty industrial shelving less intimidating.

Better Quality

Many people are of the opinion that the material of industrial shelving is irrelevant, as they assume that any material will support the weight of your products equally. However, this could not be farther from the truth. Plastic or wooden industrial shelving is usually of low quality and can support a lot less weight than their heavy duty metal counterparts. Heavy duty industrial shelving is essential in properly supporting your goods without damaging them.

Space Optimization

When you use industrial shelving, you are better able to manage the floor space that you have. As your company grows, the number of products that you have to store only increases. This leaves you with two options: adding space by moving to another premise or adding space by better utilizing your current warehouse through a more optimal shelving layout. The former can prove to be quite expensive, so for warehouse managers that are trying to stick to a budget, the latter is a fantastic option. Besides simply making better use of your existing floor space, you can also use heavy duty industrial shelving that takes advantage of your vertical space. Taller racking systems can help you to utilize space that is otherwise wasted.

Maximize Your Workspace with Warehouse Storage Racks and More

Jungheinrich Narrow Aisle forklift with mast raised

Have you ever wondered if doing something as simple as changing the layout of your warehouse could impact your bottom line? News flash: it can, and in a big way. Warehouse optimization involves examining every corner of your workspace to improve the health of your business and maximize your warehouse’s potential. There are many ways that you can go about optimizing your warehouse space, including adjusting the layout of your space, implementing the right technology for your application, installing warehouse storage racks that best suit your needs, and so on. To reveal the best course of action for your business to achieve maximum warehouse potential, enterprises often seek the help of an experienced warehouse solution provider. These companies have the ability to guide you through whatever challenges your warehouse might present, while advancing the efficiency, productivity, and safety of your warehouse environment at the same time. Read on as we discuss some tips for maximizing your warehouse space and what to look for in a third-party warehouse solution company.

Improving Your Organization and Processes

While it may be important to get a professional’s opinion regarding the best way to maximize your unique space, there are some simple ways that you can work to improve the organization and processes within your warehouse. The following are some helpful hints for warehouse optimization:

Layout & Organization

Design a floor plan that works for now and later: Maximizing your warehouse’s potential starts with an efficient layout. If you have several material handling stations, you should make sure that their locations make sense. For example, you would want parts located near your assembly operation to facilitate faster results. Improving the layout of your warehouse so that complementary operations are in close proximity means that your staff can be more productive overall. In addition, if your warehouse often sees clogged aisles and cluttered floor space, it might be time to develop a floor plan that includes better storage solutions. This could include reconfiguring your warehouse shelving racks or optimizing bin and container space. Be sure to allow room for future growth as well.

Use clear signage for more efficient navigation: A warehouse sans labels and signage is more likely to become chaotic and counterproductive. Let your employees know where to find items, specific workstations, and more by posting clear signage around your space. Moreover, be sure to include designated pathways for both pedestrians and equipment operators so that they can navigate your warehouse more efficiently.

Consider giving your warehouse storage racks an overhaul: Warehouse shelving racks should be one of the first things you evaluate when optimizing your warehouse space. Before totally revamping your storage racks, however, you should ensure that you have correctly measured your space and see if there is any additional room for more shelving. If not, you may simply need to reconfigure your existing racking system instead of purchasing and installing more warehouse storage racks.

Hiring the Right Company: A Warehouse Equipment Rental Checklist

Jungheinrich forklift in warehouse aisle

Picture this: you have a huge project lined up that requires a bunch of new equipment. However, like many other warehouse managers, you might be looking for options other than shelling out the cash to purchase all of your industrial equipment outright. Luckily, there is a way to solve the outrageous-upfront-cost debacle, and it’s called renting. Renting allows you to skip the high upfront expenses associated with buying new equipment and allows your third-party industrial equipment dealer to handle operating and maintenance costs. It also eliminates other fees that deal with insurance and government licensing that you would normally have to pay for. So, renting is a simple solution, right? Not so fast, though – there are several key factors to look out for when choosing a warehouse equipment rental company. Keep reading to discover the most important things to look for in an industrial equipment rental company.

What to Look for in an Equipment Rental Company

Outlined below are five factors that should drive your decision when picking the best industrial equipment dealer to rent from.

Experience

When it comes to the material handling industry, there is more at stake than you might think. One mistake can lead to product damage, equipment damage, or even worse – bodily harm to your employees. Make sure that you hire a company that has plenty of experience operating equipment, as a seasoned industrial equipment dealer will be in a better position to recognize any potential mistakes that can derail your project.

Customer Service

When you rent your industrial machines, you might find that you have questions or concerns that pop up. While hiring a trusted equipment dealer that has the right gear for your project is important, it is equally as important to hire a company with the right attitude. The company you choose should be able to provide you with professional customer service that aims to answer all of your questions about your rental equipment.

Education

When working with any piece of industrial equipment, there is a certain level of knowledge that must be held in order to maintain a safe working environment. Hiring a warehouse equipment rental company that is not properly educated about the material handling industry or is not certified to handle the machinery they sell could be a red flag. It would be wise to opt for a well-rounded equipment rental company to avoid mishaps and ensure that you are truly getting the most out of your investment.

The Pros and Cons of New and Used Pallet Racking

Industrial Multi Level Shelving in Warehouse

Regardless of whether you are relocating to a new warehouse, expanding your current warehouse, or simply need a temporary storage solution, purchasing a pallet racking system is a major decision. Pallet racks are not only a significant financial investment, they are also an integral part of your warehouse’s day-to-day operations. Before deciding on a new racking system, you must first consider your options. Fortunately, there is no shortage of warehousing supplies, both new and used, available for purchase. While there are several benefits associated with buying new pallet racks, there are just as many advantages to purchasing used pallet racking. The deciding factor will ultimately depend on your application, but you must first understand the pros and cons of each. Read on as we explore the advantages and disadvantages of used versus new pallet racking systems.

New Pallet Racking

New pallet racks are best used in brand new warehouse facilities. They have several benefits and disadvantages, which are outlined below.

The Pros

New pallet racking gives warehouse managers the ability to fully customize their pallet racking systems from the get-go. With new pallet racking, you are able to get the exact warehouse solution that you need for your space. For instance, if you purchase a new racking system, you can configure your racks so that they are accessible by multiple material-handling systems or even add a mezzanine level for added storage space. A new racking system will also be more aesthetically pleasing compared to used systems, as the latter has endured its fair share of wear and tear.

The Cons

Despite the many benefits that new pallet racking has to offer, there is a major drawback to consider: the price tag. The financial side of purchasing a new system is undoubtedly less attractive than the shelving itself. The upfront costs associated with buying a new pallet rack are quite high compared to that of a used system. If you’re looking to save money, new pallet racking might not be the best option.

The Benefits of Preventative Forklift Service & Maintenance

CAT Pneumatic forklift holding a shipping container

Forklift service should be performed regularly in order to avoid costly repair issues. It is suggested that forklifts be serviced about every 200 hours of use. Then the question becomes time use or actual pedal use? Determining use is comparable to the little sticker that an automotive repair facility places on your windshield after an oil service showing the “Next Oil Change: Date and Mileage” recommendation. There is a mile use and a time use distinguished. With forklift service, it is a pedal use and a time use distinction.

Forklifts also require a daily maintenance check, usually by shift, that should be documented per OSHA regulations. Having a pre-operation checklist available is important and plays a significant role in making sure that all safety measures are being observed and adhered to. This is helpful in documenting both time and pedal usage so the correct forklift maintenance schedule can be practiced and adhered to. During these inspections, if a problem is detected, schedule the forklift for service with your forklift repair company.

Daily Forklift Service Checklist

There are things such as tire pressure, outside equipment conditions, and operational gears that need to be checked before an operator hops in and goes to work with the forklift. It is important that operators have been trained on what to look for that may be problematic.

In addition, there are apps that can assist in the daily and shift checklists for operators which is another form of documentation that the equipment is being checked daily. Using the app will also ensure that the operator understands the importance and that nothing is forgotten on the checklist.

Inspections should consist of outside and onboard inspection. The outside inspection would include things such as:

Important Factors to Consider When Planning Forklift Maintenance

3 CAT forklifts in a service bay

As a warehouse manager, you probably know that any disruption to the daily workflow is a large inconvenience and could have a serious financial impact on your business. This is why it is critical that you regularly maintain and service every piece of machinery you own. Forklifts in particular are very important for facilitating everyday heavy lifting that exists in a warehouse environment, making them an especially important piece of equipment. While many companies do understand the importance of forklift maintenance, they are not always sure how often it should be performed. Read on as we discuss some guidelines to determine how to best plan your fleet’s maintenance schedule and some key maintenance tasks that should be performed.

The Age of The Fleet

The age of your forklift fleet plays a large part in determining a good maintenance schedule. The industry standard for maintenance is usually between 200 and 250 hours of operation. It is also important to note that this timeframe gets smaller with every year that passes. Once your fleet begins experiencing issues between forklift maintenance periods, you should start looking for new units.

The Amount of Forklifts

The number of forklifts in your fleet also affects your maintenance requirements. Companies that own many forklifts typically have a backup in the event that one of their lift trucks breaks down. A bigger fleet also means that you have the option of alternating units so that one specific forklift is not the only one being used. Warehouses with only a few forklifts tend to push them to the limits and are simply out of luck if one breaks down. By scheduling regular maintenance, you can greatly reduce the risk of this occurring and interrupting your usual business operations.

A Guide to the High Lift Pallet Jack

High Lift Pallet Jack

A high lift pallet jack is an affordable, user-friendly alternative to lift trucks and forklifts. It features a hydraulic mechanism that allows a single operator to lift a full-size pallet and move it around a warehouse without excessive strain. Keep reading as we explore the types of pallet jacks available, how to use one, applications for your machine, and the advantages of owning a pallet jack.

Types of Pallet Jacks

There are two main types of pallet jacks, which are outlined below:

Manual Pallet Jacks - These machines are entirely hand-operated and are best for simpler tasks.

Electric Pallet Jacks - This type of pallet jack features a powered lift mechanism and sometimes includes ride-on capabilities depending on which model you choose. This makes them better suited for lifting stacked pallets and heavier loads. While electric pallet jacks do offer some additional lifting power, they also require a lot more maintenance and the machine’s complexity lends itself to a shorter service life than fully manual models.

How to Use a High Lift Pallet Jack

Using a manual pallet jack is a fairly straightforward process. The steps are as follows:

Know Your Forklift Parts: Picking the Right Mast

Mitsubishi Pneumatic forklift moving long goods

When selecting what type of forklift to buy, the mast is one of the most important forklift parts to consider. The forklift’s mast is the portion of the truck that lifts, lowers, and positions loads that are being supported by the forks. Each type of mast has its own set of advantages and disadvantages for different applications depending on their height and stacking requirements. There are four main styles of forklift masts, and they are outlined below.

Single Stage

The single stage mast has one channel with a limited lifting height. Free lift, which is the ability to lift the load and forks without moving the mast channels, is not available for this type of mast. Due to this limitation, the mast must extend higher than the other mast options so that you can stack loads. Single stage masts are often seen in outdoor applications where overhead clearance is not a concern due to a lack of height clearance restrictions.

Two Stage

The two stage forklift mast is more common and has free lift options available. This mast style is typically used for stacking and double stacking in indoor spaces with limited overhead clearance. Two stage masts provide excellent visibility and are ideal for use in trailers or box cars.

Three Stage

The three stage style is the most common and versatile forklift mast available. Its free lift capabilities and greater heights provided by three stages make for fantastic lift for stacking in general warehouse applications.

Quad Mast

A quad mast – or four stage mast – provides the highest reach because of its four sets of moving rails. These rails are designed to accommodate extremely high stacking in specialized warehousing and other specific industries.

HLSR 2020: CAT Lift Trucks, Photo Booths, and a VIP Party

Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo stadium view with forklifts working

Starting in 1932, the now famous Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (HLSR) has been offering attractions including everything from a calf scramble to live musical entertainment to cowboy-inspired art to carnival rides and more. HLSR’s involvement in educational programs has also attracted a younger crowd to participate in the Rodeo happenings, with the Rodeo committing $27 million to educational programs in 2020. The Houston Rodeo’s high level of success can be attributed to several things – one of them being the volunteers and small businesses that are responsible for providing things like yummy carnival snacks, Texas-approved cowboy boots, and keeping the grounds beautiful. Darr Equipment was honored to be able to fulfill that last responsibility by using CAT Lift Trucks to prepare and maintain the grounds for our fellow Rodeo-goers. Read on to see the ways we celebrated this year’s brief but exciting HLSR.

Darr Equipment’s Role at the Rodeo

Darr Equipment is the official lift truck provider for the 2020 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo. However, this is not our first rodeo – we have been working with the HLSR folks for 16 years to beautify their space prior to opening each year and maintaining the grounds throughout the duration of the Rodeo. Although this year’s Rodeo was cut short due to Coronavirus concerns, we were still elated to be a part of the 2020 HLSR.

Fun Times at the Grounds

Engaging with the crowds at the Houston Rodeo is one of our favorite parts of the Rodeo experience. We set up a photo booth in NRG Park with the intention of creating a space that families and friends could pose for a quick snapshot. We also placed some of our CAT Lift Trucks in the NRG Center for people to view up close and personal.

Party like a RockDarr

Darr Equipment hosted a VIP event where all of our top customers and team members gathered to commemorate the beginning of this year’s Rodeo. There was fantastic music, some fun dance moves, and plenty of food and drinks to go around. Between all of these things, we also celebrated our longstanding clients. We absolutely loved being able to loosen up and have fun while recognizing the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo and our other outstanding clients.

We are so grateful for the opportunity to once again work with the lovely people responsible for HSLR. Even in the wake of a global pandemic, our community came through to support the small businesses that were impacted by the Rodeo’s early closure – similar to how HLSR has given back to small businesses and the community around them for years.

Helpful Tips When Buying Used Forklifts

CAT Forklift getting a load off truck

Purchasing used forklifts can save your company a fortune, making it easier for smaller firms to fulfill their material handling requirements. With that said, used equipment comes with its own risks that could potentially cost you in the long run. Below are some key tips for navigating the pitfalls of purchasing secondhand machines.

Make Sure Your Truck is Suitable for Your Application.

To the average person, forklift trucks might all seem the same. However, they can vary greatly from model to model and according to how they are kitted out. Some key questions that need to be addressed to ensure that you are choosing the right truck for your purposes include:

· Will your forklift be used regularly?

· Will it be used indoors, outdoors, or both?

· What tasks will your truck be performing?

Ways to Improve Warehouse Efficiency: From Industrial Racking Systems to Training

Multilevel Shelving inside of a warehouse

Warehouse efficiency is extremely important for the sake of distributing products in a timely manner and should be a top priority of the warehouse manager. Warehouse efficiency is not only critical in making shipping quick and accurate; it also ensures maximum productivity while incurring minimal costs and significantly cutting the time needed to fulfill orders. With so many moving goods and the constant fluctuations in demand and other changing dynamics, increasing warehouse efficiency is often easier said than done. With that said, it may come as a surprise how many simple adjustments can be made to positively impact your firm’s bottom line. Regardless of the scale of your warehouse operations, anything from reconfiguring your industrial racking systems to properly training your employees can make all the difference in your warehouse’s efficiency levels. Read on as we take a look at small changes you can make in your warehouse to promote more workplace productivity.

Analyze Your Product Usage Patterns

A great place to start improving your warehouse’s efficiency is by analyzing your product usage patterns. This means that you should store popular goods that move the fastest near the front of the warehouse for easy access. This enables a faster, more efficient picking and stocking process. Another way to optimize product placement is to store products that are often sold together near one another. Furthermore, you can create a separate designated area for items that move at a slower rate to avoid interference with the movement of other goods.

Keep Your Warehouse Layout in Check

Having industrial racking systems that complement your warehouse’s layout can indeed work wonders for improving warehouse efficiency. However, poor management of these racking systems can quickly turn your once well-organized workspace into a disjointed mess, which can negatively impact your employees’ productivity and cause safety issues. Keep an eye on your warehouse shelving and layout by educating your employees about functional areas, material flow into those areas, and where you can move certain items. Having an efficient warehouse means ensuring that your employees are following the correct procedures and using the most efficient routes possible.

Types and Uses of Order Pickers

Two narrow aisle forklifts in warehouse aisle

One of the most basic tools in a warehouse is the order picker. This type of forklift truck allows employees to quickly pick orders from even the highest shelving in the warehouse. While extremely common, these trucks are not uniform. They come in several different types and with several different features. Understanding your options when it comes to them can help you choose the right tool to maximize your own warehouse's picking productivity.

Picker Basics

At its most basic, an order picker is a type of lift truck that contains a mast upon which an individual can stand. The mast then moves up and down to give the picker access to any of the shelves in the warehouse. Most pickers have a weight limit of 3,000 pounds.

Order pickers of all kinds, as their name implies, are lift trucks used to improve the productivity and efficiency of order picking within a warehouse. In particular, these lift trucks are used to select individual items from the shelves rather than entire crates.

For example, a warehouse might use one to select individual items from a crate in order to fulfill an order, rather than selecting an entire pallet for transport to or from the warehouse. They may be used, for example, to select one package of napkins rather than an entire case of napkins to fulfill an individual order for a household rather than a commercial order for a restaurant.

Order Picker Features

While all order pickers operate in essentially the same way, they do have differences that affect how they perform and in what environments they perform best. Consider these features that you can get with these lift trucks:

Picking the Right Forklift Rental: The Benefits of Rough Terrain Forklifts

Kalmar industrial forklift outside

If there is one thing that traditional forklifts cannot do, it’s operate on unstable surfaces in difficult outdoor environments. This inability can be attributed to a number of things, such as inadequate traction or not enough ground clearance (which is necessary to handle uneven, rocky, or muddy terrain). When forklifts are lacking in these areas, the stability of your machine becomes compromised and it is no longer safe to operate. So, where does this leave businesses that must operate under these rugged conditions? This is where rough terrain forklifts come in. These forklifts are an ideal solution for all-terrain applications, including those found in forestry, construction, and agriculture. The lifting functions that a traditional forklift has paired with the utility of a tractor is what makes rough terrain forklifts truly unique. These off-road workhorses can easily climb embankments and operate on rough surfaces while carrying a load without posing safety issues or getting stuck. Read on as we dive into the features of a rough terrain forklift rental that make it much more suitable for the great outdoors than its conventional counterpart.

Ground Clearance

A key feature for any all-terrain vehicle is ground clearance, which measures the distance between the lowest point of the undercarriage and the ground while on a flat surface. A higher ground clearance allows your forklift to clear obstacles and terrain without getting high centered. On the other hand, a machine that lacks sufficient ground clearance is likely to get stuck when it travels over changes in ground elevation. Because traditional forklifts are meant to operate on paved surfaces and relatively smooth roads, they usually have ground clearances of about four inches, whereas rough terrain forklifts are built with large tires and an elevated chassis to give your forklift rental 12 inches or more of ground clearance.

Greater Traction

Maintaining enough traction is another necessary component when it comes to traveling over soft, muddy, or uneven terrain. A high level of tire traction allows your forklift to climb crests and travel over slippery or loose surfaces without getting stuck, putting strain on the engine, or fruitlessly spinning the tires. For rough terrain forklifts, this traction is achieved through the use of a 4-wheel drive system, large off-road tires, and articulating axles. When compared to a traditional forklift, the tires on an all-terrain forklift are about two times as large and feature deep grooves that increase the tire’s area of contact with the ground. At the same time, the articulating axles allows up to a seven degree lateral change in elevation between the tires, which helps to keep all of the machine’s tires on the ground while traveling over uneven ground. This maximizes traction while maintaining the stability of the forklift.

Industrial Pallet Racks and Order Picking Efficiency

Jungheinrich narrow aisle forklift with mast extended and box

Order picking can easily consume more than half of a warehouse's resources. Since order picking is one of the most labor-consuming, time-consuming, and budget-consuming aspects of warehouse operations, streamlining it is one of the biggest ways warehouses can improve tight profit margins. Warehouses can adopt many strategies for improving their order picking efficiency. In the effort to create more efficient operations, warehouse managers need to take advantage of the opportunities provided by industrial pallet racks.

More than simply a place to store pallets, these racking systems are also a tool for improving efficiency within the warehouse. Consider these suggestions for using your racking systems to improve your ability to quickly and cost-effectively fulfill orders.

Choose racking systems that contribute to efficiency for your warehouse.

Every type of pallet racking system has both advantages and disadvantages. A space-saving system like a pushback system or mobile shelving, for example, can reduce the need for aisles, but also increase order picking time.

As a result, warehouses need to carefully consider their storage and their order picking needs when selecting a racking system for their space.

For example, a warehouse that has ample floor space might prefer a selective racking system because of the easy access it provides, while another warehouse might find that its productivity increases when it can store a few high-demand SKU's in one location with high-density industrial pallet racks.

Heavy Duty Industrial Shelving: Steel Edition

Jungheinrich Forklift in warehouse aisle with mast extended

Reorganizing your warehouse can be a huge undertaking. It can create periods of downtime that can sink productivity and profits. This is why it is so important to invest in durable products that have the stamina to withstand your day-to-day operations and the versatility to grow with you. One of those products falls under the category of heavy duty industrial shelving. More specifically, steel industrial shelving has many benefits associated with it. Read on as we delve into the advantages of using steel shelving solutions in your warehouse.

Customizable

Steel shelving can come in many different styles, weight capacities, heights, colors, and more. In addition, more so than other types of shelving, steel industrial shelving can be accessorized and customized to fit any space. From dividers to drawer inserts, shelving can be inserted in virtually any direction with whatever accessories you might need.

Adjustable Setup

Compression clips allow shelves to be adjusted within a half to one and a half inch increments. This gives your heavy duty industrial shelving unit the flexibility required to create the most productive design to fit your warehouse’s inventory.

Easy to Assemble

If your vendor does not assemble your shelving unit for you, do not worry. Industrial steel shelving can be put together using only a rivet – amazing! There are even easier options out there, too; if you ordered boltless rivet shelving, simply attach support rivets to upright posts and you instantly have a working shelving unit. Many times, assembly can be done without the use of hardware at all. This is especially helpful when you need additional shelving quickly.

How to Save Money On a Forklift Rental

Kalmar forklift outside in front of building

During times of economic uncertainty, like the pandemic-fueled one we face now, saving money is often a primary goal for businesses. Preserving cash to weather potential downturns in business is a wise financial move until the economy stabilizes and business picks back up again.

At the same time, businesses that run fleets of construction equipment and forklifts have to face the ongoing realities of their machines' needs. You cannot cut corners on maintenance without suffering long-term repercussions like early replacement or potentially serious accidents. You cannot forego forklift replacement unless you want to violate OSHA regulations and put your forklift operators and other employees at risk.

Forklift rentals can save you money in the short term.

For businesses facing these realities, there are solutions. One of the easiest is to choose a forklift rental over a forklift purchase, at least for the short-term.

Rentals have a few advantages that can make them affordable and appealing, particularly in tough economic times when having cash on hand is more important than long-term savings:

● Rented forklifts cost up to a third of an outright purchase: While renting a forklift consistently over the long term may leave you with greater costs than purchasing a forklift, it can be a good solution while you wait for economic times to stabilize. Rentals are also a good choice when you have jobs that are far away from where you headquarter your forklifts, or when you need an extra machine for just a job or two.
